As a young child, I watched my immigrant parents work 14-16 hour days, 7 days a week. My mom would wake up before dawn to cook me breakfast before going to work. She’d get home at 11pm, exhausted, just in time to wish me goodnight. Yet, no matter how tired she was, she always smiled and showered me with unconditional love.
My dad worked just as hard and expressed love by providing for our family. This hard work and endless struggle was meant for one purpose. To give me and my sister a better life than theirs. I remember the message they imparted on me, “Create something so you don’t have to live this life...”
